Lesson 1.3: Class Equipment

Equipment Requirements

Chair

A sturdy chair is used in every SilverSneakers® Everyday Movement class to provide support, stability, and options for seated or standing exercise. It may also support posture, balance, stretching, and rest as needed.

A straight-backed, armless chair with a firm, non-contoured seat is recommended. A stable steel-frame chair is preferred when available.

Optional Handheld Weights

Handheld weights are optional and may be incorporated to add resistance when appropriate for the participant and the exercise. Exercises may also be performed using body weight only.

Instructors may offer bodyweight and weighted options to accommodate different abilities and preferences within the same class. Participants should be encouraged to select the option that allows them to move safely, comfortably, and successfully within their individual abilities.

Supportive and Mobility Devices

Participants may use their own supportive or mobility devices, such as wheelchairs or rollators, during class when appropriate.

When a supportive or mobility device is used, ensure that:

  • Wheels are locked when appropriate
  • The device is stable and secure
  • The surrounding exercise space is free from hazards or obstructions

Supportive devices should enhance safety, confidence, and participation without creating additional risk.

Exercise Space and Safety

Instructors are responsible for maintaining a clear and safe exercise environment. Equipment should be positioned so participants have adequate space to move and so that chairs, handheld weights, mobility devices, or other items do not create tripping hazards or obstruct movement.
