As an instructor, you are responsible for managing class set up to support safety and reduce the risk of tripping hazards.
Set chairs in rows using a staggered or honeycomb pattern so all participants can clearly see you at the front of the class. A general guideline for spacing is approximately 4 feet by 4 feet, or 16 square feet, per participant.
Assistive Devices: Walker, Cane, Wheelchair, or Rollator
You will often work with participants who use assistive devices. Proper placement helps maintain safety and accessibility.
Walkers Ask participants to place their walker next to their chair. When possible, guide participants using walkers to sit on the end of a row to reduce the risk of creating a tripping hazard for others.
Canes Ask if the cane can be placed at the front of the room during class. At the end of class, ensure the cane is returned to the participant.
Wheelchairs and Rollators Participants may remain seated and exercise using their wheelchair or rollator. Ensure that wheels are locked and that the device is positioned securely. Confirm that it does not create a tripping hazard for others.
Your goal is to ensure that assistive devices support safety and confidence while maintaining a clear and organized class space.
A well-organized and safe class environment also helps participants feel more confident, engaged, and ready to participate.
