Lesson 1.2: What is SilverSneakers Everyday Movement?

Class Description

SilverSneakers® Everyday Movement provides gentle, chair-supported exercise designed to support mobility and range of motion across major joints. Exercises reflect movements used in activities of daily living, helping participants maintain or improve their ability to move comfortably and confidently in everyday life.

In addition to physical movement, the class may incorporate simple cognitive and social elements that encourage engagement, interaction, and an enjoyable class experience.

Target Audience

SilverSneakers® Everyday Movement is designed for individuals who may benefit from a gentle, supportive approach to physical activity.

Participants may include older adults who:

  • Prefer or benefit from chair-supported exercise
  • Are beginning or returning to regular physical activity
  • Experience changes in mobility, strength, balance, coordination, or endurance
  • May benefit from additional support when performing movements related to everyday activities
  • Prefer a slower-paced class experience with simple, functional movement patterns

What Defines the Everyday Movement Format

SilverSneakers® Everyday Movement is not defined by a participant’s diagnosis, age, or physical ability. Rather, the format is defined by its supportive approach: gentle, functional movement; chair-supported options; an approachable pace; and opportunities for participants to move successfully within their individual abilities.

How Everyday Movement Differs from SilverSneakers® Classic

SilverSneakers® Classic is an accessible, full-body fitness format designed for a wide variety of fitness levels. The class incorporates strength, endurance, flexibility, mobility, balance, coordination, and other skill-related fitness components, with options that allow participants to work at an appropriate level. Additionally, each Classic experience includes exercise opportunities with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a six- to nine-inch SilverSneakers ball.

SilverSneakers® Everyday Movement offers an even gentler approach. The format emphasizes chair-supported movement, an approachable pace, simple movement patterns, and activities that relate directly to everyday function. It is designed for participants who may benefit from additional support, more time to complete movements, or a less physically demanding class experience.

While both formats support functional movement and can be adapted to individual abilities, Everyday Movement places greater emphasis on gentle movement, accessibility, and successful participation in everyday activities, with less emphasis on developing multiple fitness and skill-related components.

Everyday Movement is not simply a modified version of Classic. It is a distinct format intentionally designed to provide a supportive movement experience for participants who may benefit from a gentler starting point or who simply prefer this approach.

In the next lesson, we will review the equipment used in class and how it supports a safe and effective experience.
