Lesson 1.1: Why Everyday Movement Matters

We begin by considering the experience of many older adults. Evelyn sits by the window in her senior living community and looks out at the blooming garden. She was once a master gardener with steady and skilled hands. Now, she notices changes in her strength and coordination.

This morning, a nurse named Alex helped her get dressed. As Alex buttoned her cardigan, Evelyn felt a sense of frustration. This was once a simple task that she could do independently.

As instructors, we will work with individuals who may be experiencing similar changes. Many older adults notice differences in strength, balance, and energy. These changes can impact everyday activities such as climbing stairs, walking longer distances, carrying groceries, or getting dressed.

While these changes are often associated with aging, they are also influenced by levels of physical activity.

We know that engaging in regular physical activity may help support strength, balance, and overall function. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights that activities which improve strength and balance may help older adults maintain functional abilities, reduce fall risk, and support quality of life (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024).

Through a structured and supportive class like SilverSneakers Everyday Movement, we can help participants maintain or improve their ability to move comfortably and confidently in daily life.

SilverSneakers Everyday Movement is designed to help address these everyday changes through gentle, supportive movement that emphasizes mobility, functional ability, confidence, and connection. The class provides participants with opportunities to practice movements that support everyday activities while meeting them where they are in their current abilities.

Let’s take a closer look at the purpose of the class, who it is designed for, and the goals that guide the Everyday Movement experience.
