The following guidelines help support a safe and effective class environment:
Follow all established safety guidelines
Keep all exercises seated or standing. Do not include floor work
Avoid high-risk movements
Cue participants to move within a comfortable range
Limit repetitions to recommended guidelines
Use appropriate overhead positioning to support shoulder safety
Use clear and concise communication
As an instructor, your ability to communicate clearly is especially important. Many older adults experience changes in vision, hearing, and processing speed. Simple and direct cueing may help support understanding and safety.
Additional Safety Considerations:
Ensure the class space is well-lit and free of hazards
Use appropriate flooring when possible
Encourage proper footwear that supports stability
Position participants who need additional support closer to you
Consider additional assistance for larger classes
Emergency Action Plan
As an instructor, you are responsible for understanding and following your facility’s emergency procedures.
Know how to exit the building safely
Have a plan for medical emergencies
Review emergency procedures with participants when appropriate
Communicate with staff or caregivers supporting participants
Being prepared helps create a calm and organized response if an emergency occurs.
