Instructors should take responsibility for managing class set up to ensure safety and minimize the risk for tripping hazards.
Chairs should be set up in rows, in a honeycomb fashion, making it easy for all participants to see the instructor at the front of class. A good guideline for optimum spacing between chairs is to provide approximately 4′ X 4′, or 16 square feet, for each member of class.
Walker, cane, wheelchair or rollator
Recommend that participants place their walker next to the chair. Guide members with walkers to sit on an end if possible, so the walker does not become a tripping hazard for another member.
If a participant has a cane, ask “if the cane can be placed at the front of class,” and when class is finished return the cane to the member.
A member may sit and exercise in their wheelchair or rollator. Ensure that the wheelchair or rollator does not become a tripping hazard and lock wheels in place.
