Course Introduction

Welcome to the SilverSneakers Fall Prevention Education Series online instructor training. The purpose of this training course is to prepare you to lead SilverSneakers members in a fall-risk assessment, and to provide you with educational tips and extra skill drills to use during physical activity classes that will benefit participants. A combination of these elements, in addition to the utilization of SilverSneakers Signature classes – Classic and Stability – will allow you to present a class that is designed to decrease the likelihood of a fall in older adulthood. At the end of this training, you will have access to a 12-week reference guide and other resources to help you feel confident in leading your SilverSneakers class with the fall prevention educational components. 

Course Learning Objectives

By completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify fall risk factors.
  • Recognize the benefits of fall prevention programming to SilverSneakers members.
  • Implement a structured 12-week program to help members improve their balance and stability and decrease their risk of falls.
  • Guide members through evaluating their own levels of fitness as it relates to balance and stability.

SilverSneakers® Nutrition for Optimal Aging

Course Introduction

Nutritional needs change throughout life. Physiological changes normal during the aging process may result in the body requiring fewer calories to get to or remain at a healthy weight. At the same time, obtaining the right amounts of certain nutrients is important for healthy aging. This course will 1) discuss strategies for increasing nutrient rich foods in the diet while being mindful of caloric intake, 2) identify obstacles to healthy eating, and 3) provide tools and resources to empower SilverSneakers instructors to be a positive influence for their class participants.

By completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand appropriate scope of practice when sharing nutritional guidance with class participants. 
  • Explain the function of macronutrients in healthy aging.
  • Describe how physiological changes of digestion and nutrient absorption change with age.
  • Identify the types of malnutrition observed in later years and list three positive steps in overcoming these challenges.

Course Introduction

SilverSneakers® group exercise classes attract participants with a wide range of abilities. An important area of concern for many older adults is decreased muscle mass and loss of strength. A well-prepared class that provides intensity variations will engage participants by helping them improve their strength and maintain a functionally independent life. This course will discuss the adverse effects of age-related muscle loss and the benefits of strength training. Techniques for creating progression and regression variations for strength exercises will be demonstrated. Most importantly, we will examine how to use different teaching methods to create a supportive and inclusive environment for a positive group exercise experience.

  • Define age-related changes to the muscular and nervous systems.
  • Identify benefits of resistance and strength training for older adults.

Welcome to the SilverSneakers® Community Engagement Representative (CER) Onboarding training. The purpose of this training course is to prepare you for success in your role as a CER. You will learn how to represent Tivity Health™ and engage with the community at local events and educational programs. You will also receive instructions and job aids to help you complete the administrative responsibilities associated with your role, and learn more about how to support and interact with members, potential members, and other Tivity Health partners.

Course Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  3. Complete administrative tasks related to the CER role.

Hip osteoarthritis and hip replacements are conditions that require thoughtful class preparation. This course will build on the Foundations training by providing a more in-depth understanding of the healthy hip, hip osteoarthritis, and hip joint replacements. This course is designed to equip you with tools to build safe and effective class choreography. Examples of appropriate exercises for a group setting to improve hip mobility and stability along with progression and regression variations will be provided.
