Lesson 1.3: Class Implementation

Shoe-Friendly Environment

This Yoga format is shoe-friendly. Instructors should model this by wearing appropriate shoes.

  • Shoes help prevent injury, especially for participants with diabetes or neuropathy
  • Socks-only participation is not permitted due to slipping risks

No Floor Work

All exercises are done from seated or standing positions using the chair for support. This eliminates the need for floor-based transitions, which can be risky for older adults.

Movements of the Spine

Yoga promotes spinal health through five key movements:

  1. Torso elongation
  2. Flexion (forward bending)
  3. Extension (backward bending)
  4. Lateral flexion (side bending)
  5. Rotation (twisting)

Instructors must use caution when choosing exercises, particularly for those with osteoporosis. Avoid deep twists or forward folds that may strain the spine.
