In a SilverSneakers Yoga class every participant must have a chair for seated and standing support. Equipment like a SilverSneakers ball and elastic tubing with handles are optional.
Chair
The recommended SilverSneakers chairs are straight-backed, armless, steel-gauge chairs with non-contoured seats. The chair is used for:
Placing equipment and water bottle within reach
Standing support (behind or to the side)
Seated exercises including Final Stretch and Relaxation
Elastic Tubing with Handles
Elastic tubing with handles can be used to create movement opportunities that mimic the use of a yoga strap. The use of tubing can help with flexibility, range of motion and supports empowered thoracic breathing.
SilverSneakers Ball
A 6–9 inch semi-soft ball may be used for:
Hand-eye coordination activities
Targeting small muscle groups
Fun and engaging multi-muscle movements
Enhancing muscular endurance
Shoe-Friendly Environment
The SilverSneakers Yoga format is shoe-friendly, meaning instructors and participants should wear supportive, comfortable and appropriate shoes. Shoes help prevent injury, especially for participants with diabetes or neuropathy.
Socks-only participation is not permitted due to slipping risks.
Floor Work / Yoga Mats
The SilverSneakers Yoga format does not include any floor work; therefore, mats are not needed. Yoga mats provide extra grip and decrease the risk of slipping for those with bare feet. However, the chance of falling increases for those wearing shoes on a mat. For this reason, participants should not stand on a yoga mat while wearing shoes, as it creates a slipping hazard.
