Lesson 3.3: Risk-Versus-Benefit Exercise Selection

The Stability class follows the SilverSneakers guidelines for exercise safety. Make risk-versus-benefit exercise selection decisions to ensure that the drills incorporated in your class are both safe and effective for your participants. Avoid teaching high-risk movements as exercises.

  • Limit the number of bilateral overhead arm movements.
  • Avoid exercises that cause excessive forward flexion at the hip.
  • Use caution when programming inversions.
  • Avoid jamming, locking, and forcing joints into a stretch.
  • Avoid overuse of joints and muscle groups.
