Lesson 1.2: SilverSneakers Stability Format Overview

Class Description

SilverSneakers Stability is a drills and skills class designed to improve balance, agility, mobility, and power in an older adult.  All functional movement requires an effective balance system in order to successfully execute daily activities, from walking down the street, to dancing, to executing a squat.

A class like Stability will improve one’s confidence and independence. Life happens at various speeds, so finding a movement, holding a movement and progressing through a movement is key to improving the kinesthetic awareness of the exercise being performed.

Class Goals

Stability classes give participants an opportunity to participate in a regularly scheduled, instructor-led activity. The business goals of Stability classes are to:

  • Expand enrollment through offering a falls-preventions class format.
  • Maximize participation by providing members with a skills-based class. This format may draw participants who enjoy the group setting but avoid highly choreographed formats.
  • Improve retention by helping participants master new skills. Participants will see their progress over time, which increases the likelihood of adherence to their exercise program.

Stability and the Member Experience

The look and feel of Stability is unique. The SilverSneakers member experience is guided by the PACE model. The four pillars of PACE are Purpose, Achieve, Community, and Empower:

  • Stability classes are designed with the purpose of improving balance and stability. Through thoughtful exercise selection, including flexibility exercises, gait training, and progressive movement variations, stability improves functional fitness.
  • Stability classes are achievable. Through a “work at your own pace” exercise model, participants can achieve their desired exercise intensity and exercise goals.
  • Stability classes create a sense of community. Instructors are relationship builders. In Stability, optional station-based work can increase member-to-member interaction and strengthen social support.
  • Stability empowers members to live their best lives. Stability includes exercises that boost confidence and independence in daily life.
