Lesson 1.1: What is SilverSneakers Splash?

SilverSneakers Splash is a shallow-water exercise class that uses a signature splashboard for stability and resistance training. Splash is suitable for all skill levels and non-swimmers. The aquatic environment provides many benefits for range-of-motion, aerobic and resistance training.

Health and Fitness Goals

Functional Skill
There are many health benefits to SilverSneakers Splash. Movements are designed to improve strength and power to assist activities of daily living in all participants. 

Strength and Endurance
Exercising in the water is different from exercising on land. It’s important to understand the water principles of buoyancy and drag, which creates resistance in multiple directions. Application of these principles to aerobic and strength exercises can increase strength, endurance and improve muscle balance. 

Flexibility
Flexibility exercises will improve joint mobility and range of motion. The water is an ideal supportive environment. 

Splash classes incorporate a splashboard, which provides flotation assistance and resistance. Although instructors are required to include it in class choreography, participants are not required to use the Splashboard. Other equipment (e.g., noodles and hand buoys) may be used in addition to the SilverSneakers splashboard. Maintain and replace equipment as necessary.
