Course Introduction
Nutritional needs change throughout life. Physiological changes normal during the aging process may result in the body requiring fewer calories to get to or remain at a healthy weight. At the same time, obtaining the right amounts of certain nutrients is important for healthy aging. This course will 1) discuss strategies for increasing nutrient rich foods in the diet while being mindful of caloric intake, 2) identify obstacles to healthy eating, and 3) provide tools and resources to empower SilverSneakers instructors to be a positive influence for their class participants.
Course Learning Objectives
By completing this course, you will be able to:
- Understand appropriate scope of practice when sharing nutritional guidance with class participants.
- Explain the function of macronutrients in healthy aging.
- Describe how physiological changes of digestion and nutrient absorption change with age.
- Identify the types of malnutrition observed in later years and list three positive steps in overcoming these challenges.
