Lesson 1.2: SilverSneakers Signature Classes

In this lesson you will learn about SilverSneakers signature formats and the unique benefits they provide.

As an instructor, you’ll be leading classes within our approved partnering locations or within an independent instructor network. We offer eight distinct class options to suit a wide range of member abilities, skills, and fitness goals. All signature classes have similar components and are designed to improve health- and skill-related fitness components.

Leading signature SilverSneakers class formats outside of approved partnering locations or networks is not permitted.

Our signature class formats include:

SilverSneakers® Classic

Class Description, Equipment, and Member Audience:
  • Move through exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of motion and activities for daily living. Weights, tubing and a SilverSneakers ball are offered for resistance.
  • Equipment needed: Chair for seated or standing support, ball, tubing, weights
  • Our most versatile class.
  • Great for a beginning exerciser or participant with limitations.

Classic Intensity Scale 1-5:

SilverSneakers® Circuit

Class Description, Equipment, and Member Audience:
  • In Circuit, upper-body strength work with tubing, weights and a SilverSneakers ball, is alternated with low-impact cardio movements to maximize fitness benefits while minimizing stress on joints.
  • Equipment needed: Chair for standing support, ball, tubing, weights
  • Great for an exerciser looking for a moderate-intensity workout.
  • Must exercise in a standing position for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Circuit Intensity Scale 1-5:

SilverSneakers® Yoga

Class Description, Equipment, and Member Audience:
  • Move through seated and standing yoga poses to increase flexibility, balance and range of motion. A chair is used for a variety of fitness and skill levels. Breathing exercises and relaxation promote stress reduction.
  • Equipment needed: Chair for seated or standing support - Optional ball or tubing
  • Great for a beginning or more experienced exerciser interested in Yoga and flexibility training.
  • Seated and standing options provided.

Yoga Intensity Scale 1-5:

SilverSneakers® Splash

Class Description, Equipment, and Member Audience:
  • Enjoy aquatic exercise with this shallow-water class to increase strength and cardiovascular endurance. A Splash kickboard provides resistance and flotation assistance. This class is suitable for all skill levels including non-swimmers.
  • Equipment needed: Signature Splashboard
  • Great for exerciser interested in aquatic format.
  • Perfect for those who may be uncomfortable exercising on land.

Splash Intensity Scale 1-5:

SilverSneakers® Stability

Class Description, Equipment, and Member Audience:
  • Focused on improving balance and lower body strength, Stability is designed to decrease the risk of falls. This standing class uses chair support and a variety of training techniques to advance muscular endurance, cognition and skills for fall prevention.
  • Equipment needed: Chair for standing support
  • Ideal for the exerciser interested in fall prevention training.
  • Participants must be comfortable exercising from a standing position.

Stability Intensity Scale 1-5:

SilverSneakers® EnerChi

Class Description, Equipment, and Member Audience:
  • EnerChi’s low-impact, tai chi movements are practiced in a slow, flowing sequence to progress strength, balance and focus.
  • Equipment needed: Chair for seated or standing support
  • Great for an exerciser interested in improved balance and overall well-being.
  • Seated and standing options provided.

SilverSneakers BOOM™ MIND

Class Description, Equipment, and Member Audience:
  • The best of yoga and Pilates in an intermediate to advanced, mind-body mat workout. Core strength and balance exercises build endurance while increasing flexibility to boost your mood and promote well-being.
  • Equipment needed: No Chair - Optional floorwork
  • Perfect for the active older adult seeking a moderate intensity mind-body class.
  • Participants must be comfortable exercising from a standing position.

Mind Intensity Scale 1-5:

SilverSneakers BOOM™ MUSCLE

Class Description, Equipment, and Member Audience:
  • Boost overall fitness with alternating muscle-conditioning blocks and activity-specific drills. Intermediate to advanced intervals using weights will improve cardiovascular health, strength and functional skill.
  • Equipment needed: No Chair, weights, tubing - Optional floorwork
  • Perfect for the active older adult seeking a moderate to vigorous intensity workout.
  • Participants must be comfortable exercising from a standing position.

Muscle Intensity Scale 1-5:

SilverSneakers BOOM™ MOVE

Class Description, Equipment, and Member Audience:
  • This fun, dance-inspired workout improves cardio fitness with easy-to-follow movement patterns. Intermediate to advanced options allow you to choose your intensity while you move to the music.
  • Equipment needed: No Chair
  • Perfect for the active older adult seeking a moderate to vigorous intensity workout.
  • Participants must be comfortable exercising from a standing position.
