SilverSneakers EnerChi applies tai chi principles in a format accessible to SilverSneakers members and caters to a wide range of skills and abilities. It is appropriate for those new to exercise or managing chronic conditions, as well as those who have been exercising regularly and are looking for a new experience. SilverSneakers EnerChi provides a beneficial tai chi-inspired class experience in the following ways:
- Movements are low-impact and gentle, putting minimal stress on muscles and joints.
- Traditional forms are simplified to a right-left and forward-backward moving pattern.
- Learning and practicing forms improves cognitive health and mental focus.
- Attention to weight shifting improves muscular strength, balance and aids in reducing fall risk.
- Class design allows for self-paced practice.
- A chair is used for seated and standing support options. Additional equipment is not required, so participants can continue the practice at home or while away from their class or fitness center.
- Applying tai chi principles of slowing down, increasing awareness and focusing on deeper, continuous breathing improves mindfulness in daily activities.

An important principle in all tai chi movement is to have awareness of an incoming force, yield, absorb and then redirect that force. This principle has application in daily life by teaching one to remain calm and maintain control in unpredictable circumstances such as maneuvering slippery ground, reacting to a trip or stumble or responding to a stressful situation.
Practicing the forms and exercises slowly and with control teaches participants to be mindful during movement. The practitioner becomes aware of how weight is distributed in the body to improve posture and balance during practice and in daily living over time.

- EnerChi classes are designed with the purpose of improving functional skill and movement efficiency. This is accomplished teaching tai chi principles of movement control and weight transfer while maintaining postural alignment. Attention is given to focused breathing to reduce stress, increase flexibility and improve an individual’s sense of well-being.
- EnerChi classes are achievable for a wide variety of fitness abilities. The format is designed with both seated and standing options. Participants learn and practice modified tai chi forms and build on these to create a flowing sequence. Qigong exercises complement the practice to promote mindfulness and aid in smooth transitions between forms.
- EnerChi classes create a sense of community. Instructors foster connections and relationships within the group exercise environment. The group experience breaks down barriers with participants by learning new skills and improving self-confidence.
- EnerChi classes empower individuals with skills to improve physical confidence and principles to enhance social confidence. Participants improve functional ability, maintaining independence in daily life to Love Life Longer™.
