This lesson includes a sample library, short snapshots of class segments and cognitive challenges.
SilverSneakers Classic
Below is an example of a SilverSneakers Classic class. For more information on utilizing the required Classic tools – elastic tubing with handles, hand-held weights and the SilverSneakers ball – during the work phase of a Classic class, please see the Classic format training.
Classic – warm-up; uneven rhythm variation, a brain teaser, and speed variation.
Classic – cool-down; uneven rhythm variation, a brain teaser, and speed variation, and coordination with crossing the midline.
SilverSneakers Circuit
SilverSneakers Circuit includes blocks of cardio and strength, and here are examples of how cognitive exercises are done in each.
Circuit – cardio segment; words assigned to movement, coordination drill and uneven rhythm variation.
Circuit – strength segment; coordination drill and uneven rhythm variation.
SilverSneakers Yoga
Creating a mind/body connection can add depth to the brain challenges presented during a SilverSneakers Yoga class which can provide benefits to your participants.
Yoga – warm-up; a list used for memory recall.
Yoga – cool-down; crossing the midline and a list used for memory recall.
SilverSneakers Stability
Let’s review some examples of how cognitive challenges can be added to Stability during the work phase of class.
Stability – work segment; crossing midline, reaction time, adding math to movement, assigning color cues to movement.
Stability – cool-down segment; dual tasking with one leg stance, alphabet challenges.
SilverSneakers EnerChi
The SilverSneakers EnerChi format can provide many opportunities for improving brain health, with its use of circles and spirals, weight shifting and multi-directional movement.
EnerChi – work segment; crossing midline and coordination.
EnerChi – cool-down segment; crossing midline.
SilverSneakers Splash
It is important to refine non-verbal cuing skills when teaching cognitive drills in a SilverSneakers Splash class.
Splash – work segment; coordination, uneven rhythm variation, speed changes, crossing midline.
