As we learned in Foundations, each signature SilverSneakers class targets health- and skill-related goals. BOOM MIND aims to improve specific components in the following ways:
- Endurance – Holding postures in yoga and Pilates not only builds muscular endurance while improving flexibility, but the focus on proper breathing techniques can improve lung function and capacity as well as respiratory endurance.
- Balance – The wide variety of stances required to perform many of the yoga postures provides an endless array of balance training options and challenges. Standing with feet together requires more balance than standing with feet apart. You may use wide and narrow stances to modify intensity or for conditions as described above.
- Core Conditioning – All movement begins in, and is supported by, the core which is a concept central to every Pilates practice. Pilates incorporates a range of exercises to challenge core strength.
- Sense of Well-Being – Yoga and Pilates are the most well-known “mind/body” formats. By focusing on the connection between form, movement, and breath, we help participants develop powerful tools for fighting the mental, emotional and physical effects of stress. Self-awareness and acceptance are important benefits of this class.
- Flexibility – Many people state they don’t practice yoga or Pilates because they “aren’t flexible.” Flexibility may be the most important aspect of health and fitness and it can be improved through yoga and stretching. But, flexibility is not a prerequisite for participation in BOOM MIND.
- Strength – BOOM MIND is a total-body conditioning class. The optional mat work allows you to bring additional focus to core strengthening.
- Cognitive health – According to the National Institute on Aging, cognitive health is the ability to clearly think, learn, and remember (2017). By coordinating movements of the upper and lower body and incorporating relaxation techniques, BOOM MIND works to improve brain health and cognition.
