Making nutritious food choices at the grocery store and knowing how to read nutrition labels plays a vital role in leading a vibrant and active older adult lifestyle. This course will provide you with the knowledge and tools to deliver quality nutrition information to members, helping them better understand the importance of shopping the perimeter of the grocery store, reading nutrition labels, and making healthy food purchases.

As with all Member Engagement Workshops, the Grocery Store Tour workshop is meant for instructors to present to members outside of their regularly scheduled fitness classes for additional engagement. Please note that you will need to print materials.

  • Identify workshop materials and use these materials to deliver an engaging workshop experience.
  • Explain MyPlate guidelines for a healthy diet and how these guidelines can be used to make optimal choices while shopping at the grocery store.
  • Demonstrate the ways that shopping the perimeter of the grocery store can help direct healthy food choices.
  • Facilitate class activities to help participants read and understand nutrition labels and apply what they have learned to food choices.
  • Describe ways that workshop participants can reduce their risk of illness and disease by making optimal nutrition choices.
