Following hip replacement surgery, many people have little to no pain for the first time in a long time. This may cause a class participant to progress activity or exercise too soon, perhaps by doing too much at home, not following progression guidance provided in class, or only coming to class sporadically and not managing his or her physical progression. Remind the member to respect his or her body and the time it takes to heal. If the following signs and symptoms are noticed in a class participant, refer the participant back to his or her doctor:
- Increased swelling or increased pain in the hip joint
- Increased or abnormal fatigue
- Change in performance or technique
- Increased muscle soreness or duration 48 or more hours following exercise
- New source of discomfort or pain
